Swiss Modern Furniture

Vitra is a modern furniture company similar to Knoll but Swiss and 12 years younger. As a matter of fact, here at bauhaus, we often think of Vitra as Knoll’s younger, Swiss counterpart. Founded in 1950, Vitra is “dedicated to improving the quality of homes, offices and public spaces through the power of design.” Focused on quality design and longevity of materials, products and concepts are developed in an intensive design process, which “brings together engineering excellence with creative genius of leading international designers.” With its collection of classics, modern furniture pieces that have been in continuous production since the 1950s, Vitra boasts some big names: Saarinen and Gehry, to start. In addition to being a leader in modern design, this Swiss company is dedicated to sustainability as part of their culture and design process.

Vitra’s product offering ranges from modern stools for a living room to airport tandem seating. Though our designer hearts will always lie with the modern classics, we are most excited and energized by the office furniture. No more panels, benching is where it’s at in the furniture world, and they have two stunning collections that have caught our eye — WorKit (2008) and Joyn (2002). Barely into their middle-school years, these product lines are more than just office furniture with an extensive project portfolio.

Designed by Arik Levy, WorKit is a “rational and versatile office furniture system with a visually subtle design.”  As the corporate office and its demands are always changing, the WorKit collection’s unique connection element PIN allows WorKit to be easily reconfigured and adapted to new sizes and layouts.

Designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Joyn “combines a variety of room functions in one single level: the platform.” Its mobile and modular structure spontaneously adapts to the changing requirements and technologies, and can be easily reconfigured time and again. Not just a table, the range includes single and conference benching, accessories and micro-architectural add-ons.

With a series of legs and horizontal channels, the desk transforms into a multi-function, integrated benching system. Electrical components run through a central beam and can be specified for high electrical use (dedicated workstation) or low electrical use (meeting areas).

Clever accessories that integrate with the system include side screens and walls, screens with pin board, storage swivel shelf, file boxes, and desk blotters.
